And you know what? I don’t plan to make one either. Every year we decide on something that we want to change or be better at in the coming year. And so to solidify this thought we make a resolution in the new year, whether it’s to get more fit, lose weight, make more money, or whatever. The bottom line is, there is something we want to change or be “better” at in the coming year. The problem with this is that we never keep, succeed at, or achieve our resolution.
As I mentioned in the title of this post I did not make a New Year’s Resolution. I didn’t do it on purpose, in fact I was so busy thinking about what I want out of this year and how I was going to get it. I was reflecting on the previous year about what I enjoyed, what I didn’t like, what worked and how to incorporate that into the new year. So this year I have created goals for my personal life, business, and family life. There are specific things that I want to achieve and see completed this year and I must stay focused to get it. Isn’t this similar to a New Year Resolution? Nope, not in my opinion.
The difference between setting goals and setting a resolution is the big picture. Goals are connected to your over all big picture of what you are trying to achieve in your life. A New Year’s Resolution doesn’t necessarily connect and that’s why people fail to achieve it. Let’s look at an example. When you decided that your New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight what is the purpose. It may be because you want to look good in a dress, tired of being fat, or whatever. But if this is your reason, after a while you will lose interest in all that needs to be done in order to achieve the success. However if you turn it into a goal, and figure out how it connects to your “BIG” picture in life which might be – to be able to run after my children, have more confidence in myself so I can be a better mom and/or wife, a lifestyle change, etc. When times get hard, you will continue with your activities because there is more of a meaning to you. You see goals are always connected to a bigger picture that contains the ultimate you in your ultimate life. As oppose to the the New Year’s Resolution which can change, or be dismissed as your feelings change that day.
If you haven’t created your New Year’s Resolution for 2012 it’s okay. Try something different and create some goals instead. If you have created your New Year’s Resolution then think about how does this resolution connect to your big picture. Will achieving this resolution put you closer to your big picture?
Stay Blessed
